ACOLYTES
(Click here to return to Sunday Servants page.)

The word acolyte is a Greek word meaning one who serves, assists, or helps.  There is no “right” or “wrong” way to serve as an acolyte.  The best rule is to serve with dignity and care.   “Thank you God for the privilege of serving you.  Increase in me reverence and humility that my participation may assist all who worship here.  Amen.”

8:00 AM Service…….Please arrive by 7:40 AM; report to the church sacristy. The Acolyte Coordinator or Pastor will assist you as you robe and prepare for your duties.

Light the candles
approximately ten minutes prior to the start of the service.  Enter the Chancel area with the long, brass taper (candle lighter) and proceed to walk around the outside of the altar rail to the center front “gate” opening.  Reverence the cross; proceed to the top step to light the candle on your RIGHT first.  Stay on the top step; walk to the front center of the altar; reverence the cross; light the candle on your LEFT.  Exit the altar area down the steps to your left or the steps behind the altar.  Blow out the taper flame and hang taper on the hook on the wall behind the door.  After a prayer with the pastor, return to the chancel area and take your seat on the bench on the pulpit side.
At the designated time for the

offering

(noted in the bulletin), take the offering plates from the shelf; proceed to the center opening; give the plates to the ushers.  Return to your seat.  When the ushers have collected the offering and are standing in the back of the church; go to the center altar rail opening; receive the plates from the ushers; hand the plates to the Pastor; wait for the Pastor to return the plates to you; take the plates to the shelf and be seated.
Note:
If there is an additional “Joyful Noise” offering (usually on the 3rd
Sunday of the month), pass out the silver buckets after the offering plates in the same manner as you would the offering plates at the 10:30 a.m. service (see below).

Communion Procedure: (With the exception of the First Sunday of the Month)

FOLLOWING the Lord’s Prayer, receive communion at the back altar rail with the lay assistants.  After all assistants/Pastor have received communion and they proceed

to the front to distribute communion, take a full tray of cups from the altar and stand behind the pastor and lay assistant.  When a wine assistant needs a full tray of wine cups, give the full tray and take the empty tray back to the altar, getting another full tray as needed.   When all have communed, return to your seat.

First Sunday of each Month:

Communion around the altar.  As above, receive communion at the back altar rail after the Lord’s Prayer.  Retrieve the basket from the table next to your bench and follow the Assisting Minister to collect the used communion cups.

During the singing of the last hymn; go to the sacristy and get the taper.  Enter the Chancel area in the same way you did to light the candles. Reverence the cross before proceeding to the top step to extinguish the candle on your LEFT first.  Gently

hold the extinguisher over the flame for a few seconds to put the flame out   Stay on the top step; walk to the center; reverence the cross; extinguish the candle on your RIGHT.  You extinguish the candles in reverse order to the lighting of the candles.  Exit the altar area down the steps to your right into the sacristy. Hang the taper on the hook behind the door.  Hang your robe, cincture and cross in the closet.

DON’T FORGET TO SNUFF OUT ALL CANDLES THAT HAVE BEEN LIT FOR A SERVICE!   When additional candles have been lit for worship (Paschal Candle, for Baptism or Advent Wreath Candles),  snuff out these candles after

extinguishing the altar candles.
